According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, none of Real Madrid’s four summer signings will go to the World Cup. Dean Huijsen, Álvaro Carreras, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Franco Mastantuono have been omitted on sporting grounds.

Madrid spent around 180 million euros on the quartet.

For the first time in World Cup history, Spain’s squad contains no Madrid player. Huijsen came close but an inconsistent season told against him.

Carreras did not even make the 55-man preliminary list. Still uncapped, he ended the season third-choice left-back at Madrid, behind Fran García.

Trent’s last England call came in June last year, a 26-minute outing against Andorra. England’s list includes Reece James and Tino Livramento at right-back.

Mastantuono was the last of the quartet to be cut. The playmaker debuted for Argentina a year ago against Chile and joined every camp when fit, but he has not made the final list to defend the Qatar 2022 title.

Elsewhere, Eduardo Camavinga misses out on France after a very poor season, while Éder Militao and Rodrygo Goes are injured. Andriy Lunin’s Ukraine did not qualify.

Madrid’s contingent features Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Vinícius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Thibaut Courtois, Arda Güler, David Alaba, Brahim Díaz and, pending confirmation, Fede Valverde. Endrick, on loan at Olympique Lyon since January, is also in with Brazil.

That leaves Madrid third among La Liga clubs for World Cup representation with 10 players, three fewer than Qatar 2022 and five fewer than Russia 2018, behind Atlético and Barcelona.
