Real Sociedad have lodged an appeal against the red card shown to Brais Méndez in the 83rd minute at San Mamés, which left them with ten men and was followed by Galarreta’s 88th-minute equaliser for Athletic. According to AS, the club consider the dismissal scandalous.

Players and coach were angered by the decision, which they did not understand, with referee Cuadra Fernández facing away from the incident. The absence of a VAR review was seen as the most surprising element.

The flashpoint stemmed from a tussle between Aitor Paredes and Méndez. The Athletic defender pushed the Galician midfielder, who raised an arm while trying to shrug off his marker.

With the referee turned away and after a brief pause, Paredes went to ground as if struck. Cuadra Fernández then produced a straight red for Méndez.

The referee’s report said Méndez was dismissed for violent conduct, alleging a slap to an opponent’s face with excessive force while the ball was not in play. The footage shows that was not the case.
