San Sebastián turned blue and white as Real Sociedad paraded the Copa del Rey to Alderdi Eder. According to Diario Vasco, thousands followed on foot and by bike from Anoeta through the city centre.

Most wore La Real shirts, scarves aloft, with bob-style Gora Euskadi caps prominent. One supporter even lobbed a phone up for a selfie, then caught it on the return.

Pavements overflowed from Avenida de Madrid, so recycling bins and lampposts became perches as players and staff moved to Gala’s Free From Desire, the Anoeta goal anthem also heard at La Cartuja on Saturday.

By Plaza Centenario the convoy took Urbieta in reverse, the squad uncorking champagne and dousing jubilant onlookers. For fans long used to watching others celebrate on TV, it felt like a baptism.

Balconies dressed in white and blue balloons and garlands became grandstands for families saluting the team on a warm afternoon. New favourite Matarazzo, often seen strolling nearby, soaked up the acclaim.

On Avenida de la Libertad a giant Aurrera Reala banner draped a building. It was first funded during the lockdown Cup by neighbours, Adnan Januzaj and Gipuzkoan sailor Agustín Zulueta, grandson of former president Emilio Zulueta. Five years on it reappeared near Matarazzo’s home as the Cup travels to Gipuzkoa, and locals hope to hang it again soon.

Captains Oyarzabal, Zubeldia and Elustondo flanked the trophy, lifting it for the crowd, while Goazen Reala and a coffee then rum refrain led by Orri Oskarsson greeted the approach to Alderdi Eder.
