Celtic went into the game against the Rangers far from 100 percent. The Hoops were without their captain, Callum McGregor. The midfielder had been dealing with an issue leading up to the game and Brendan Rodgers decided not to take on a risk, which was somewhat expected. That being said, Auston Trusty's absence from the squad did come as more of a surprise.
Trusty has established himself as a regular starter since arriving in the summer from Sheffield United. As a result, his unavailability did come as a major blow for Celtic.
The Hoops' problems were compounded on the day as they did not have Liam Scales available either. As a result, Rodgers had no choice but to bring in Maik Nawrocki from the cold and put him in the starting XI.
Now, Rodgers has provided some insight into why Trusty was left out of the squad to face the Rangers. The manager said while talking to Celtic TV:
"Auston picked up a slight calf knock so he trained yesterday and likewise he was too sore."
Celtic made the worst start possible to the game against the Rangers. They conceded a goal in the 4th minute and then in the 37th minute to go two goals down.
Celtic had lost the previous Glasgow Derby 3-0 at Ibrox and unfortunately, this was not the bounce back performance that the fans would have been hoping for. Especially as this game was being played at Parkhead.
The only silver lining is that the result of this game is not expected to have much of an impact on the Premiership title race. The Hoops have a significant lead already and while a loss in the Glasgow Derby is never acceptable, that would at least make it easier to digest.
