Birmingham City will be looking to compete for a play-off place in the 2026/27 Championship season after a campaign of mixed fortunes last time out.

Blues were a side which many thought could immediately challenge at the top end of the second tier in 2025/26, largely due to their high-profile recruitment drives under Chris Davies, as well as their record-breaking season in League One beforehand.

However, it is fair to say that not all of the signings acquired last summer and earlier in 2026 proved to be a success in the short-term, meaning that there has been plenty of focus on transfer activity ahead of the new season.

So far, Davies has added four new faces to his squad, with James Beadle and Jhon Solis returning to St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park from Brighton and Hove Albion and Girona FC respectively, albeit the Colombian midfielder has turned his previous loan spell into a permanent deal.

Meanwhile, the club was heavily praised for moving for Dael Fry on a free transfer after the centre-back left Middlesbrough, whilst approximately £3m has been spent on Argentine forward, Luis Vazquez.

The 25-year-old moved to B9 earlier in the week, and his addition has been met with mixed reviews, and he could immediately be replacing Marvin Ducksch, with a fresh update emerging on the future of the experienced German forward.

Ducksch was signed from Werder Bremen last summer for £1.75m, and there was plenty of excitement surrounding the deal at the time given his two caps for the German national team, even though the striker's signing coincided with pre-season fitness issues.

As such, it took until November 22nd for the 32-year-old to open his account with a brace in the 4-1 success over Norwich City, before eventually ending the campaign as the club's joint-highest scorer alongside record signing, Jay Stansfield, with 11 strikes in all competitions.

However, after the forward was at the centre of a three-way car collision nearby to Birmingham's EPIC training facility in April and charged in excess of £20,000, he has also been the subject of intense exit talk.

It has been widely reported that his contract includes a €1m non-promotion clause, and it has now been claimed by German publication, BILD, that the West Midlands outfit will not stand in his way in terms of a swift exit.

The publication state that Ducksch would like to take on a key sporting role at a new club, as well as being a leader in a playing capacity as he weighs up his latest career move, whilst the report also suggests he may depart Birmingham on a free transfer depending on circumstances.

Several clubs are said to have taken an interest in a potential deal too, and one of those is MLS side, Orlando City, after it was also reported in March that sides across the Atlantic had explored the possibility of a move for Ducksch's signature.

As previously mentioned, this is a transfer saga which has been rumbling on in one way or another for some time now, and the aforementioned fresh developments do make sense given Ducksch's recent revelations over his future.

The likes of Bundesliga outfit, FC Augsburg, were previously linked with the attacker, who then revealed his stance on the matter live on German television during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

"I’m definitely in talks with several clubs, including some in the Bundesliga. But it’s still relatively early," said Ducksch.

"But of course, if there’s a club where I’m convinced by the whole concept, then I would definitely like to return to the Bundesliga or to Germany."

Even though £1.75m is not the greatest sum of cash in this day and age, it would still be hugely frustrating for Birmingham if they were to make a loss on the services of Ducksch, especially after suffering the same fate with Japanese forward, Kyogo Furuhashi, who recently moved to LA Galaxy.

However, the German hasn't been heavily involved in Davies' pre-season plans after nursing an injury earlier this month, which only added further fuel to such transfer speculation.
