Sky Sports have released refcam footage showing Anthony Taylor’s in-game calls during Sunderland’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Early in the first half he briefly halted play to warn Jason Tindall and Sunderland coach Michael Proctor over dissent towards the fourth official. He told them both would be booked if it continued.
Newcastle appealed for a penalty when Anthony Gordon went down, but Taylor judged Trai Hume had not fouled him and that Gordon stepped across his path. A VAR check supported the on-field decision to play on.
Just before half time Hume was cautioned for a foul on Anthony Elanga. A confrontation followed involving Gordon, Omar Alderete and Joelinton, which Taylor moved to defuse. He told captains Granit Xhaka and Kieran Trippier that two others should have been booked and asked them to manage it.
In the second half he awarded Chemsdine Talbi’s equaliser, ruling Aaron Ramsdale had been impeded by a team-mate and that, after Hume’s follow-up, Habib Diarra used his chest to turn the ball goalwards. VAR confirmed both judgments.
At 1-1 he then ruled Jacob Murphy was interfering from an offside position as Malick Thiaw’s header went into the Sunderland net.
Later Taylor noted the initial effort was a save before Brobbey turned in the rebound. He rejected Murphy’s handball query, awarded the goal and booked Brobbey for removing his shirt.
