Referee Ermano Feliciani was extremely lenient in yesterday’s Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Empoli, even ignoring blatant fouls.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the match became a very physical one because of Feliciani’s refereeing.
Referee Feliciani evidently wanted to let things move along without too many interruptions yesterday evening at the San Siro.
Therefore, the official was not in the mood to blow his whistle for every contact or challenge.
However, the Gazzetta argue, Feliciani took things too far.
In the first half, the Empoli players took advantage of the lenient attitude from Feliciani.
There were several challenges that were right on the limit, with shoves and rough physical contact making it hard for Inter’s players to get into their rhythm.
In the view of the Gazzetta, Feliciani ignored blatant fouls by Emmanuele Gyasi, Liberato Cacace, and Youssef Maleh in the first half.
Then, in the second, Inter’s players also started to get more physical.
Seemingly realizing what the standard of refereeing was going to be, the Nerazzurri responded. And the match became a very physical contest indeed.
