Spanish refereeing committee admits error after Huijsen’s historic red card sparks debate
Refereeing Disaster: Spain’s Committee Admits Error in Real Madrid Controversy
Real Madrid’s 2 - 1 away win over Real Sociedad on Saturday was overshadowed by major refereeing controversy.
Referee Gil Manzano showed 20 year old defender Dean Huijsen straight red card in the 32 minute ruling he'd denied clear goalscoring chance as the "last man".
Footage later showed that Brazilian centre back Eder Militao was covering nearby meaning Huijsen wasn't the final defender.
Coach Xabi Alonso insisted after the match:
"It should have been yellow. Militao was close and the ball wasn't under full control"
According to Marca, Spain’s refereeing committee has acknowledged Manzano’s decision was incorrect.
The controversy deepened as VAR official Figueroa Vazquez failed to intervene .. a lapse that could now see him face suspension.
Manzano himself is also unlikely to officiate Real Madrid games again this season, given recent scrutiny over refereeing links.
Huijsen’s dismissal made him the youngest Real Madrid player ever sent off in La liga at 20 year & 152 day .. narrowly surpassing Marcelo’s 2007 record (20 year, 138 day).
Despite the drama, Los Blancos held on for victory but the fallout's expected to dominate Spanish football this week.
