Régis Le Bris praised Trai Hume and Luke O'Nien after Sunderland's famous win over Chelsea sealed Europa League qualification, saying his big selection calls were vindicated.
Hume scored his second Premier League goal of the campaign to set the Black Cats on their way, then O'Nien, restored to the starting XI, helped create the crucial second by threading Brian Brobbey through. According to Sunderland Echo, the defender also impressed throughout at the back.
Hume has risen with Sunderland from League One to seventh in the top flight, and has played more minutes than anyone except Robin Roefs and Enzo Le Fée across all competitions. His versatility remains a hallmark, and in recent weeks he has returned to the right wing ahead of an attacking full back, a switch that sparked debate among supporters. Le Bris had backed him firmly before kick-off.
The head coach said the outcome did not surprise him, stressing that assessment goes beyond pure technique to the connections, work rate and balance within the team. He held up Hume as a model team-mate whose graft allows performances to emerge, which he felt was the case here.
Le Bris also highlighted O'Nien's influence, saying both players have been vital in preserving the dressing room identity after a major summer overhaul. He added that they helped newcomers understand what the club stands for.
Both look set for important roles next season as Sunderland contend with an increased fixture schedule.
