Régis Le Bris has outlined Sunderland’s pathway for Ahmed Abdullahi, indicating a different step may be needed before he can push on.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 21-year-old joined from Belgian side Gent on deadline day in summer 2024, then had groin surgery on a pre-existing injury shortly afterwards. A difficult recovery meant he did not make a competitive appearance that campaign, and he has had further issues this season.
When fit he has been prolific for the U21s, and last week he impressed in the 2-1 Premier League Cup final defeat to Burnley, despite not scoring.
He was close to a loan to Ligue 1 side Angers last summer, but the move collapsed due to financial problems on the French club’s side.
Le Bris said Abdullahi’s ability is obvious and his age is on his side, but injuries across the last two seasons have disrupted training and his connection with the group. He added that Sunderland are still confident in his potential and, probably, a loan this summer will be the next step before he can try to step up to the Premier League.
