Régis Le Bris says Sunderland will push to strengthen but intends to keep deals out of the spotlight to maximise efficiency, with Granit Xhaka's situation described as closed. According to Sunderland Echo, the head coach wants a discreet window as he reshapes the squad.

Sunderland were beaten 4-2 by Liverpool in Nashville on Saturday evening in their second pre-season friendly.

Thomas Meunier remains the only arrival so far. Le Bris said last week he is targeting three or four core additions before the deadline, potentially six or seven signings in total, with stability a priority after 14 arrivals last season.

He added that most of the work is happening quietly behind the scenes, arguing that keeping a low profile is essential to avoid disorder, and that this window will differ from last year. He declined to share specific targets.

Addressing Xhaka for the first time this summer, Le Bris said, "This topic is closed," Le Bris said. Chelsea had bid to reunite the midfielder with their new head coach Xabi Alonso, but after initial openness to the move Xhaka informed Sunderland he would stay.

Le Bris praised his captain as a strong leader who loves the club and wants to help shape its future. During Switzerland's run to the World Cup quarter finals, Xhaka said Sunderland felt like home, that family comes first and that he had decided to remain.
