Sunderland face Leeds United in New Jersey on Friday at 12.30am BST, the second match of their US tour. It promises another stern test as Régis Le Bris assesses his options.
According to Sunderland Echo, Melker Ellborg could start in goal. Roefs is back with the squad after World Cup commitments and is likely to be phased in, so this may be another chance for Ellborg to impress.
Nordi Mukiele returned to right back against Liverpool, where he has been integral to Sunderland’s success. It would be a major surprise if he did not line up there on opening day and beyond.
Dan Ballard made an excellent return from ankle surgery in the Liverpool game, and will look to build on that strong start to pre-season.
With Omar Alderete due back on Wearside next month after the World Cup, Luke O’Nien has a real opportunity to stake a claim for regular minutes on this tour. He has made a very solid start to date.
