West Ham United were soundly beaten by Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, falling 4-1 in the Women’s Super League at Broadfield Stadium.
Goals from Caitlin Hayes, Kiko Seike, Rosa Kafaji and Marisa Olislagers gave the hosts the win, with Viviane Asseyi’s 51st-minute penalty the only response.
And Hammers manager Rehanne Skinner said her side had lots to improve on ahead of their next matches – a midweek Subway Women’s League Cup fixture against Charlton Athletic, then a return to WSL action against defending champions Chelsea.
“In the first half we weren’t good enough,” she said to the club’s official website.
“At the end of the day, if we’re not going to fight for all of our one-versus-one battles and stick to the gameplan, then it’s always going to cause us a problem.
“We allowed the game to get too transitional again. So there are a lot of lessons to be learnt from that first half. Just as a squad, that’s not the way we set out to go about the game, and so we can’t be doing that moving forward.”
Adding that she thought the scoreline was slightly unfair, she said: “We have a competitive squad. Everybody’s got to deliver on their roles, and there are plenty of people that are looking for opportunities. That’s something that this week is going to be really important for us as a team because we need to do well on Wednesday night, and then we’re preparing for Chelsea at the weekend.
“Sometimes we all have to have a little look at where we are, and we’ve got to make sure that what we’re delivering is the right thing for the team. I think that’s going to be the biggest thing going into these next two games, that we do all of the individual bits that are going to help us to be successful – and when we do that, we’ll win games and we’ll get points.”
Asseyi, for her part, expressed gratitude to the travelling support, and went on: “We are in the best league in the world. So each of us has to be better every day, and if you see the score is 4-1, it means that it wasn’t good enough, so we’ll have time to work on it, to reflect.
“We’ll keep working, and I apologise for the fans, because we gave everything, but it wasn’t good enough. We’ll come back.”
West Ham are currently bottom of the WSL table with no points on the board.
