Michael Reiziger has appointed a new captain for the Dutch U21 team. The Jong Oranje coach has selected Rav van den Berg as successor to Devyne Rensch, who is no longer eligible.

Rensch notably wore the captain’s armband at the European Championship in Slovakia last summer. However, the AS Roma wing-back retired with a semi-final berth.

Van den Berg transferred from Middlesbrough to 1. FC Köln this summer, and has shown admirable traits according to his manager. “Rav has a certain charisma. A kind of dominance over the group, in the way he is,” Reiziger explained to ESPN.

“He is my first captain, Wouter Goes my second. Wouter is an example of fighting spirit for me. Those two are good examples.”

According to Reiziger, the Dutch Juniors are well-off with the duo. “They’ve been through a lot, are the older ones in the group, and they take the lead. And they really do.”
