Flamengo are bottom of Group B in the Campeonato Carioca and still winless, and the relegation threat has prompted a rethink. Some first team players are expected to feature on Wednesday in the clássico against Vasco.
Up to Sunday, Bruno Pivetti and the under-20s were due to play the derbies with Vasco and Fluminense on Wednesday and Sunday. According to Globo.com, after Maricá beat Portuguesa on Sunday night, Flamengo reassessed the risk of entering the relegation quadrangular and adjusted their plan.
In 2026, the state championship has two groups of six. The bottom two in each group go into a relegation quadrangular, all against all in two rounds, totalling six matches per team. The worst side in that mini-league drops to Série A2.
If Flamengo fall into that phase, it would add two extra dates and affect the senior squad’s fixture schedule. Filipe Luís is focused on the Brasileirão opener on the 28 against São Paulo, but he will release some first team players to bolster the under-20s.
The club have not yet decided which players will face Vasco. Ferj rules allow clubs to use reserve teams until the third round of the Carioca.
