Vasco finished second in Group G of the Copa Sudamericana behind Olimpia after rotating heavily to prioritise the Brasileirão. Renato Gaúcho’s experiments delivered clear verdicts, with some emerging and others falling short.

According to Globo.com, the club rested starters in five of the six fixtures. Adson was the leading beneficiary, easing fitness doubts after two serious injuries to post three goals and three assists and earn a starting place.

Ramon Rique was thrown in against Olimpia at São Januário when Tchê Tchê felt unwell in the warm-up, and he shone in the 3-0 win. He impressed the staff and was permanently promoted, as was Avellar after solid outings in for Cuiabano and Lucas Piton.

Brenner underwhelmed. He missed a penalty with Vasco already 3-0 up against Barracas Central at São Januário, a tame effort saved by the keeper, and his performances lacked spark as he struggled to find a defined role.

Carlos Cuesta briefly displaced Saldivia but wobbled with poor displays against Olimpia, despite scoring in Paraguay, and against Audax Italiano, where he was sent off. Against sides relying mainly on crosses, the Colombian struggled with his positioning inside the penalty area.

Back-up goalkeeper Daniel Fuzato also failed to grasp his chances, most notably in Chile against Audax Italiano when a miscontrolled back-pass from Saldivia ended up in Vasco’s own net.
