After Fluminense's defeat to Lanús in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals last Tuesday (16), coach Renato Gaúcho was questioned about the changes during the match and stated that the changes were specific. Besides the substitutions, the commander of the Time de Guerreiros spoke about the lack of attention in the conceded goal and mentioned that the team should have committed a foul to prevent the continuation of the play.

“At the moment I took Martinelli out and put Facundo in, I practically swapped one midfielder for another. Because I felt that, twice during Lanús' attack, Martinelli didn't get back in time, I thought he was tired, but after talking to him, he said he wasn't. I put Facundo in his place. Today, Serna wasn't having a very good night and I put Soteldo in, swapped one forward for another... Then, I felt we were a bit tired at the end and needed to hold the ball a bit more. I swapped Everaldo for Cano and put Lucho in, a more offensive midfielder, who knows how to hold the ball, precisely because I thought we could win the game. Analyzing the game, the coach mentioned that the match was well contested, with few chances for both clubs and that the Tricolor will do differently to secure qualification in the return match at Maracanã.

“We had 53% possession, I don't give much importance to possession. We had more possession. Lanús may have attacked, but real goal chances, practically neither team had.
