Roma are about to complete their first January signing, as Devyn Rensch flew in on Wednesday to take the medicals and handle the formalities before the official announcement.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the Giallorossi have been chasing him for months. They wanted him last summer before signing Saud Abdulhamid, but Ajax asked for €15M. Their courtship was successful on the player’s side, as he waited for them without renewing his contract, which helped the winter negotiation. He would have been a free agent at the end of the season.
In the end, Roma will acquire Rensch for €6M. He departs the Dutch side after 156 appearances, during which he tallied 10 goals and 12 assists. He has already played in all three continental competitions and has one cap with the Netherlands.
The 22-year-old is primarily a right-back but has starred in every defensive position throughout the years. He’ll ink a deal until 2029 and start with €1.2M annual salary.
The Giallorossi will soon bring in Pierluigi Gollini on a permanent deal from Atalanta after selling Mathew Ryan to Lens. They’ll then focus on adding a center-back, a deputy striker, and a midfielder, possibly Davide Frattesi, for whom they’ll have to wait until the final days of the window.
It’s a little rare to invest in players in his contractual situation, but perhaps they weren’t too sure they’d nab him on a Bosman move. His versatility will be useful, and he’ll be broken into the league slowly since he doesn’t come in as a day-one starter.
