Liverpool’s summer was dominated by major spending and squad overhaul, with over £450 million invested in new signings and more than £200 million recouped in sales. Yet, even after such change, the story around Joe Gomez refuses to fade.
According to MilanLive, the Serie A giants are ready to make “another attempt” to sign the England international when the January transfer window opens.
The Italian outlet reports that Gomez entered AC Milan’s “crosshairs” during the “final hours” of the summer market. Negotiations stalled, largely due to there being “very little time” to reach an “agreement” and complete the medical processes required.
Still, Milan see Gomez as a versatile option capable of strengthening their backline, and their renewed intent signals genuine interest. Their previous bid of £13 million demonstrates how much they value him as a potential reinforcement.
Arne Slot’s defensive pecking order looks settled, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté still the preferred partnership.
Gomez’s value lies in his versatility—covering both centre-back and full-back roles. That versatility makes a January exit appear unlikely, especially with Liverpool seemingly unwilling to push forward for Marc Guehi until his contract situation changes next summer.

From Liverpool’s perspective, selling Gomez mid-season feels counterproductive. As MilanLive notes, the Reds are prepared for another “serious attempt” from Milan, but unless a replacement is secured, letting him go could stretch the defensive depth thin.
With four senior centre-backs already in the squad, Liverpool are better served holding their cards until next summer. By then, Guehi’s availability on a free transfer could align perfectly with squad planning.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this report sparks mixed emotions. On one hand, Gomez has never been completely free of scrutiny, with injuries and dips in form stopping him from fully cementing a starting place. On the other hand, his adaptability makes him invaluable in a squad competing on multiple fronts.
Supporters will likely see Milan’s interest as flattering, but also as a risk. Gomez has been at Anfield since 2015, and his experience—both domestically and in Europe—shouldn’t be undervalued. If he leaves without a suitable replacement, it would feel like déjà vu from past seasons when depth issues cost Liverpool in crucial run-ins.
The idea of waiting for Marc Guehi on a free makes financial sense, but football isn’t always about numbers. Injuries to Konaté or van Dijk could leave Slot exposed. Fans will remember how losing multiple defenders in 2020/21 derailed the season.
In short, while Milan’s pursuit might tempt Gomez, many Liverpool supporters will argue this: unless Guehi or another quality centre-back walks through the door, selling Gomez in January would be a gamble the club cannot afford.
