Newcastle United have a problem, and it is becoming difficult to dress it up as anything else. According to talkSPORT, Everton are interested in Jacob Murphy, the latest name pulled into a summer that already feels far too unstable at St James’ Park.
The report says “the exodus at Newcastle United looks set to continue as Everton are keen on winger Jacob Murphy, talkSPORT understands”. That line matters, because it frames the bigger issue. This is no longer about one sale or one difficult decision. It is about a squad being chipped away, while rivals smell an opportunity.
Anthony Gordon has already gone, with Barcelona landing him in a £70million move. That was a shock in itself. Then came Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £100m. For Newcastle, those are two major exits with very little room for spin.
Bruno Guimaraes is now another source of anxiety. The report states that “the player has agreed terms with Arsenal”, although Newcastle are said to be “adamant he’s not for sale”. Fine, but fans have heard that sort of line before. When the market gets aggressive and the numbers rise, resolve is tested.

Murphy is not the biggest star in the squad, but his potential departure would still say plenty about where Newcastle are right now. After nine years at the club, he has become a useful, trusted option, and that has value. The report says he is “being considered by the Toffees who are aiming to strengthen on the wing” and, with “just 12 months left on his contract in the North East, a move to Everton may well suit all parties”.
That last phrase is the sort of language clubs use when they are preparing the ground for an exit. Practical, neat, unemotional. Maybe it does suit all parties. It certainly suits Everton if they can get a proven Premier League wide player with experience and end product.

Newcastle are trying to reshape at the same time. They missed out on Victor Munoz after Liverpool “hijacked that transfer”. They have at least signed “Ivory Coast World Cup star Bazoumana Toure for £40m”. That suggests there is planning here, but it also underlines the obvious point, replacements are being sought because established players are either leaving or being lined up for exits.
There is also the Nick Woltemade situation. talkSPORT previously reported that Newcastle would listen to offers if the numbers were right. For a player who posted 11 goals and five assists in his debut campaign, that feels telling. Nobody is completely off limits unless the club decide they are.
From a worried Newcastle United fan’s perspective, this reads like the kind of summer that can undo years of progress very quickly. Gordon gone, Tonali gone, Bruno being discussed, Murphy now linked away, it is too much noise around too many important players. You can call it squad evolution if you like, but supporters will look at this and think it resembles asset-stripping unless strong replacements arrive fast.
Murphy may not be the headline act, but fans know his worth. He understands the club, the pace of the league and the demands of the shirt. Selling players like that while the dressing room is already changing carries risk. Everton getting him would make sense for them, which is exactly why Newcastle should be cautious.
The Bruno situation is the one that really sets alarm bells ringing. Hearing that “the player has agreed terms with Arsenal” is enough to make any supporter uneasy, even if the club insist he is staying. Once that kind of story is out there, confidence drops.
There is still time for Newcastle to steady this. Bazoumana Toure may prove an excellent addition. More signings may follow. But right now, this looks like a squad losing certainty, depth and personality. Fans will not panic because Murphy is linked with Everton alone. They will panic because it feels like one more crack appearing in a window already full of them.
