A remarkable report from TeamTalk has sent a ripple of disbelief through Arsenal circles, suggesting the club have decided to sell Gabriel Martinelli in January. Even by the standards of modern transfer windows, this claim lands heavily. Martinelli has become a symbol of Arsenal’s rise under Mikel Arteta, and the idea of his departure mid season feels counterintuitive to everything the club have been building.
The Brazilian winger, still only 24, has started just five Premier League games this season, a statistic that gives surface level plausibility to the story. Yet numbers alone do not tell the full picture, particularly when weighed against his Champions League impact.
Martinelli’s European form has been exceptional. He has scored in all five of his Champions League appearances this season, becoming “the first Arsenal player in history to score in five consecutive Champions League games”. That achievement has played a central role in Arsenal sitting top of the league phase table and moving towards qualification for the knockout rounds.

Players who deliver consistently on Europe’s biggest stage are usually protected assets, not those quietly pushed towards the exit. His ability to rise in high pressure moments only strengthens the argument that Arsenal see him as a key part of their short and long term ambitions.
The report hinges on a striking claim from journalist Sercan Hamzaoulu, relayed via Futbol Arena on X. He stated, “Arsenal has decided to sell Gabriel Martinelli. He will be offered to Fenerbahçe. A costly player.”
He added, “I don’t know if Fenerbahçe will get involved in this transfer, but as I said, he will be offered [to them].”
While Fenerbahce are a major force in Turkey, the suggestion that Martinelli would be offered there immediately invites scepticism. As TeamTalk rightly note, clubs such as Bayern Munich have shown interest previously, and any genuine availability would spark attention from Europe’s elite rather than a tentative enquiry.
Crucially, Arteta’s own words paint a very different picture. Speaking earlier this year, he said, “I adore Gabriel: his attitude, his commitment, his positivity, what he’s willing to do for the team.”
“He has such a mentality. He’s constantly willing to learn, very demanding with himself, and hopefully that gives him the confidence again because he is an outstanding player.”
Martinelli’s contract runs until 2027, with an option to extend by another year. Arsenal are under no financial or sporting pressure to sell, especially as Arteta has openly discussed the value of modern “finishers”, players capable of changing games from the bench. Martinelli fits that profile perfectly.
From an analytical standpoint, TeamTalk’s conclusion holds firm. Arsenal letting Martinelli leave in January would be a huge shock, and one that currently feels highly unlikely.
As an Arsenal fan, this report feels genuinely staggering. Selling Martinelli in January would seem to undermine everything Arteta has spoken about squad depth, patience, and competing on multiple fronts. Fans have watched him deliver defining moments in Europe this season, often when the stakes are highest, and that tends to earn trust rather than exit talks.
There is also disbelief at the timing. Arsenal are pushing for both the Premier League and Champions League titles, and history shows that title winning squads rely on more than just a preferred starting eleven. Injuries, suspensions, and form dips demand proven options, not theoretical replacements.
Supporters would also question the logic of weakening an already stretched attacking group, especially when Martinelli’s attitude and work rate are regularly praised by his manager.
While January windows thrive on noise and surprise, most Arsenal fans will view this as speculation rather than substance. Until actions match words, Martinelli feels far more likely to be central to Arsenal’s spring run than packing his bags.
