Arsenal’s return to Premier League action this weekend against Nottingham Forest comes with a spotlight firmly on Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian winger has been one of Mikel Arteta’s most trusted players over recent seasons, yet his recent form has raised questions about his place in the side. After a subdued performance in the defeat at Anfield before the international break, Martinelli’s role has become a subject of debate among supporters and pundits alike.

Martinelli’s work ethic and determination have never been doubted, but the spark that once made him a decisive figure in Arsenal’s attack appears to have faded. His statistics from last season underline the point. Across 51 appearances in all competitions he registered 10 goals and six assists, a respectable output but perhaps not at the level expected of a winger in a side aiming to win both the Premier League and Champions League.
One moment at Anfield highlighted the concerns. Martinelli burst forward on a counter attack, with Viktor Gyokeres making a run in behind Liverpool’s defence. Rather than releasing the ball to the striker, Martinelli held on to it, eventually losing possession for a goal kick. That decision was replayed heavily after the game, with supporters pointing to a lack of confidence and overthinking in crucial moments.
Some close to the player believe Martinelli is struggling with the external noise. He is known to be aware of the criticism on social media, and that pressure can weigh heavily on a player who thrives on instinct and direct play.
When Martinelli produced his most productive campaign in 2022-23, scoring 15 goals with six assists, Arsenal’s approach was more fluid and expansive. The Brazilian could exploit open spaces, stretch defences and create with direct runs from the left.
Since then, Arteta has adapted Arsenal’s style. The focus has shifted to more control, structured possession and patience in build-up play. This approach has delivered consistency in league finishes, but it does not necessarily suit Martinelli’s explosive attributes.
Last season was disrupted by injuries, both for Martinelli himself and for other attacking players. Arsenal often faced opponents who defended deep, forcing the Gunners into wide deliveries and repeated crosses. That reduced the winger’s ability to play to his strengths, leaving him frustrated.
This season Arteta has introduced another shift, making the team more direct and transitional to maximise Gyokeres’ pace and movement. That adjustment could be a turning point for Martinelli. His speed is among the best in the league, and if Arsenal consistently look to play balls in behind, he could find himself in more promising situations to score or assist.

Arsenal’s investment this summer has created real competition in the forward positions. Eberechi Eze has arrived from Crystal Palace, while Noni Madueke offers another dynamic wide option. Leandro Trossard remains a reliable alternative.
Eze, although primarily seen as a number 10, has already featured on the left wing, even replacing Martinelli during the loss at Anfield. Madueke, who started on the right in place of the injured Bukayo Saka, was used by Arteta on the left during pre-season and in the opening league fixture.
Martinelli himself has acknowledged the battle for places, comparing it to the situation with Brazil where he competes with Vinicius Jr. for the left wing role. It is a comparison that underlines the level of competition he is facing both domestically and internationally.
Arsenal’s faith in Martinelli remains clear. He has two years left on his current deal, with a club option to extend until 2028. While there were discussions within the club about a potential sale this summer, it was made clear that only a considerable offer would have tempted them to part ways with the winger.
Arteta has continued to show trust, starting Martinelli in high-profile away fixtures at Manchester United and Liverpool. However, the reality is that Arsenal’s summer spending has raised expectations. Martinelli is one of the players in the squad who could command a significant fee if the hierarchy decided to make changes.
For now, the task is straightforward but challenging. Martinelli must rediscover the attacking edge that made him one of the most exciting wingers in the Premier League three years ago. With Arsenal competing across four competitions, his improvement could prove vital to their ambitions.
If the shift towards a more direct, transitional game continues, it may provide the perfect platform for Martinelli to thrive again. His pace, energy and eye for goal remain valuable qualities. What Arsenal need is for those attributes to translate into consistent end product.
Supporters will hope that the player who lit up the league in 2022-23 can return, and that Martinelli can play a decisive role in turning Arsenal’s promising squad into one capable of delivering trophies.
