Barcelona president Joan Laporta has downplayed the prospect of Lionel Messi returning to the club, describing the idea as “unrealistic”. Despite Messi’s recent comments expressing a desire to “come back, and not just to say goodbye as a player”, Laporta made clear that such speculation is unlikely to become reality.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Laporta said: “For me to make speculation that is unrealistic, nor do I think is fair, I believe that is not appropriate.” His remarks follow Messi’s visit to the Nou Camp last week, where the forward was warmly received by staff and supporters.
While ruling out a playing return, Laporta confirmed plans to organise a special tribute match once the Nou Camp’s renovations are complete. “It would be right that he has the best tribute in the world, and it would be wonderful to have it here, in front of 105,000 fans,” he said.
Messi, now 37, remains the club’s all-time record goalscorer with 672 goals in 778 appearances, winning 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues. His departure in 2021, caused by financial complications, remains one of the defining moments in modern football.

Currently playing for Inter Miami, where he recently extended his contract until 2028, Messi’s emotional bond with Barcelona endures. Laporta’s comments underline the club’s intention to honour that legacy properly, even if another on-field reunion is not on the horizon.
