Tottenham Hotspur have initiated discussions with Bournemouth over a potential summer move for highly-rated centre-back Illya Zabarnyi, amid growing speculation surrounding the future of Cristian Romero. Spurs are understood to be exploring the market for central defensive reinforcements, and sources indicate that the 22-year-old Ukrainian international has emerged as a primary target.
The North London club are aware of the increasing competition for Zabarnyi’s signature, with Paris Saint-Germain currently leading the chase. However, there is a belief at Tottenham that their proposal could match or exceed Bournemouth’s valuation, which is understood to be in the region of €70 million (£59.5m).
Bournemouth have turned down multiple offers from PSG, all believed to be worth around €60 million. The south coast club are standing firm, unwilling to lower their valuation as they attempt to retain a player considered central to their long-term plans. Zabarnyi, under contract at the Vitality Stadium, has not agitated for a move, though it’s understood he is intrigued by the possibility of playing Champions League football next season.
Sources close to the situation suggest Tottenham are currently the only English club prepared to meet the full asking price — a stance that could prove decisive if PSG do not return with an improved offer. Talks remain at an early stage, and while personal terms have not been discussed, Tottenham are expected to test Bournemouth’s resolve in the coming days.
Zabarnyi’s form has not gone unnoticed. Newcastle United have shown firm interest as they look for a reliable partner for Sven Botman, especially ahead of a season that will include European competition. Chelsea, meanwhile, have the defender on a shortlist of future targets as they reshape their backline.
Liverpool are also said to be admirers, although their interest is not currently advanced. The Merseyside club could move if they part ways with Ibrahima Konaté, but as of now, no formal approach has been made.
Despite the transfer noise, Zabarnyi remains focused on his development at Bournemouth. The Cherries have yet to grant permission for formal talks, but the situation is fluid. PSG are optimistic that their pursuit will eventually succeed, yet they remain cautious given Bournemouth’s hardline stance.
Tottenham, for their part, view this as an opportunity to land a defender with elite-level potential and Premier League experience. With Romero’s future uncertain, Zabarnyi is seen as a player who could step in immediately and provide both composure and resilience at the back.
Whether Spurs can close the deal may depend on PSG’s next move — and whether the player is persuaded by the Premier League project in North London.
