Chelsea have just put out the devastating news that first choice defender Levi Colwill has had surgery on an ACL injury.

Colwill started 35 of 38 Premier League games last season for Enzo Maresca, and was going into this season looking like he had the potential to continue to blossom into one of the league’s best defenders.

Now his own personal development comes to an abrupt halt – and Chelsea find themselves down a key player from the first XI.

One interesting topic will be Renato Veiga. He’s got one foot out of the door of the club already, and would be at Atletico Madrid already now had David Hancko’s move to Saudi Arabia not fallen through unexpectedly.

Given his gripe was that he wanted to play regularly at centre back, and that opportunity has now come up, could he potentially be kept to fill in for Colwill?

Or have the club already accounted for his sale? Does Maresca even think he’s good enough to be his starter for the season, or will he want to aim higher? There are a lot of questions now, and we need some answers.
