Crystal Palace transfer latest as Chrislain Matsima talks stall and defensive search widens

Crystal Palace are reassessing their defensive shortlist after talks with Augsburg over Chrislain Matsima stalled, according to Evening Standard. There remains room for movement later in the window, but the current focus has shifted towards alternative options as Palace prepare for life after Maxence Lacroix.

The report states that “Talks have stalled between Crystal Palace and Augsburg over a deal for centre-back Chrislain Matsima.” That situation appears fluid rather than finished, with “discussions could yet resume” if conditions change. For now, however, Palace are advancing work elsewhere as they look to replace a player who has been central to their back line.

Lacroix is “expected to formally complete a £52million move to Chelsea in the coming days”, leaving Palace with a major gap to fill. Among the names under consideration is Nathan Zeze, the 21-year-old defender currently with Neom SC. Palace’s interest is well established, and the player’s profile has been familiar to decision-makers at Selhurst Park for some time.

Nathan Zeze remains firmly on Palace radar

The Evening Standard reports that Zeze “is a longstanding target for Palace”, having first emerged on the club’s radar in 2024 while he was at Nantes. Despite attention from “Palace, Bournemouth and Liverpool”, he chose a move to Saudi Arabia last summer in a deal worth around £17m.

There is fresh encouragement for Palace in the latest update, with Zeze “already said to be keen on a return to Europe”. The report adds that “Palace have held talks with his representatives in the last couple of weeks to discuss a potential move.” That suggests meaningful groundwork has been done, even if no formal breakthrough has yet followed.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Raphael Le Guen also considered

Palace are not limiting themselves to one incoming defender. The club are “looking to make more than one defensive addition this summer” and are also “weighing up a move for former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.” The Japan international is currently a free agent after leaving Ajax and was included on the bench as a trialist during Palace’s Como Cup defeat to Lens.

Importantly, any move for Tomiyasu “is expected to be separate to negotiations for Matsima and Zeze”, underlining Palace’s desire to strengthen depth as well as replace Lacroix directly. The same thinking applies to Raphael Le Guen, with Palace “said to have agreed personal terms for the 19-year-old defender.”

Our View

From a Palace perspective, this feels fairly calm and sensible. Losing Lacroix for £52m would be a major blow on the pitch, but it is also the sort of fee that gives the club room to act properly. If Matsima has stalled, so be it. There is no point forcing a deal that does not fully suit Palace on price or structure.

Zeze sounds like the exciting one. He is young, clearly tracked for a while, and if he really is keen on returning to Europe then Palace should be pushing hard. Supporters will always back a recruitment plan more when it looks long-term rather than reactive, and this one has that feel about it.

Tomiyasu is a very different case. On ability, he would be a strong addition and brings versatility, composure and experience. The obvious concern is fitness, and that is where Palace have to be careful. If the medical side checks out and the terms are sensible, it is easy to see the logic.

The wider point is encouraging. Palace are not acting like a club caught off guard. They appear to have several names lined up, with different ages, profiles and costs. For supporters, that is what you want to see. Sell well, plan smartly, and give the squad enough quality at the back to stay competitive throughout the season.
