Gakpo shines under Slot but credits family for footballing roots

Since arriving at Liverpool, Cody Gakpo has been on a steady trajectory of development. Initially introduced into the fold under Jürgen Klopp, the Dutch forward has found his rhythm under new head coach Arne Slot, adapting well to changes in both tactics and temperament.

Now a regular presence in the Liverpool setup, Gakpo’s recent performances have reaffirmed why he was once one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents. But despite working under elite-level managers, the 26-year-old has offered a more personal view on who he believes shaped his career most profoundly.

Gakpo highlights key influence behind his development

In an interview with Sky Sports, the Netherlands international opened up about his footballing journey. While names like Klopp, Slot, Ronald Koeman and Ruud van Nistelrooy have all featured in his career, Gakpo was quick to single out a different figure when asked about his best coach — his father.

“Playing football over there was the fun bit, but the hard work was done here. The toughest, but also the best. I am going to stick with him as a coach; I cannot fire him!” he said with a smile, referencing his upbringing and the relentless dedication instilled by his dad.

Gakpo admitted that, during his teenage years, the intensive training and discipline were sometimes hard to embrace. But reflecting on where that guidance has led him — from Eindhoven to Anfield — there’s now only gratitude.

“When I look at what it has brought me and we’re still doing it, I just really enjoy it,” he added.

Slot’s impact at Liverpool draws player praise

Now working under Arne Slot at Liverpool, Gakpo has given rare insight into the new head coach’s early influence on the squad.

“He’s just very normal,” Gakpo began. “When we start to train or when we do a meeting, he’s very focused on what he wants us to do, and what he wants to teach us.”

Slot’s calm demeanour and methodical style have stood out — especially in contrast to the emotional moments fans are used to from the touchline. Still, the Dutch manager’s emphasis on logic, precision and intensity has resonated well.

“He’s very serious, very demanding as well, from the quality, from the intensity, but when the training is over… he’s very relaxed,” Gakpo added.

The former Feyenoord boss has made efforts to humanise the often high-pressure environment at Liverpool, engaging with the players beyond the pitch while keeping training expectations at elite levels.

Gakpo’s comments suggest Slot has quickly earned the dressing room’s respect, not through volume, but through clarity of message.

Liverpool’s Dutch connection continues to strengthen

Gakpo is just one of several Dutch figures at the club, with Slot’s arrival marking a continuation of the Eredivisie influence. But it’s not simply national ties bringing cohesion — it’s the manager’s structured yet approachable nature.

Slot’s combination of intensity and composure could prove vital as Liverpool transition into a new phase post-Klopp. And with players like Gakpo responding positively, it may well be the beginning of a productive new era at Anfield.
