With his dazzling performances at such a young age, Lamine Yamal has quickly become the new face of FC Barcelona. Many fans already view him as the natural heir to Lionel Messi’s throne at the Blaugrana club. Now, the possibility of seeing the two stars face each other on the same pitch is edging closer to reality.

The stage could be the UEFA–CONMEBOL Champions Cup, more widely known as the Finalissima. The showdown would bring together Spain and Argentina in a clash that promises not just a trophy, but also an iconic generational duel: Lionel Messi, the legend now playing for Inter Miami in MLS, against Lamine Yamal, the teenager tipped to lead Barça into a new era.

The biggest hurdle so far has been the calendar. While Argentina has had windows available, Spain’s schedule has been packed since their EURO 2024 triumph, leaving no space for the match.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, the March 2026 international break may finally provide the opportunity if certain conditions are met.

Spain must secure direct qualification for the World Cup by topping Group E in their qualifiers, thereby avoiding the playoffs in March.

Victories against Georgia in Elche and Bulgaria in Valladolid this October could guarantee their spot. Argentina, meanwhile, would also need to finish first in their qualifying group to avoid additional fixtures.

Meanwhile, competition to host the event is heating up. Five venues are in the running: Wembley, which staged the 2022 edition when Argentina defeated Italy; Miami, supported by the Argentine FA; Riyadh, eager to cement its status as a global football hub; Lusail, the site of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph; and Montevideo, the cradle of football history.

If everything falls into place, Barça supporters could be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle: Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players of all time, going head-to-head with the prodigy many believe is his true successor.
