Liverpool’s transfer strategy for the summer appears focused on revamping their attacking options, with sources confirming that the club has set their sights on Lyon winger Malick Fofana as an alternative to Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon. TEAMtalk revealed that the 20-year-old Belgian international is highly regarded for his performances in France, having scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 41 appearances for Lyon last season. With Premier League giants like Arsenal and Aston Villa also showing interest, Fofana’s future looks increasingly likely to lie in England.
Fofana has caught the attention of several top-flight clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, due to his explosive performances on the wing. Known for his pace, flair, and ability to create opportunities, Fofana has demonstrated the kind of directness that fits perfectly with the high-intensity pressing systems favoured by top Premier League clubs. Lyon’s financial difficulties could see Fofana available for around £40million, a figure that Liverpool see as a more cost-effective option compared to the hefty £80million Newcastle are demanding for Gordon.

In particular, Liverpool view Fofana as a long-term investment, someone with the potential to develop into a world-class winger. The club has reportedly scouted the player extensively, with the aim of securing a deal that would see him join Anfield as part of their wider overhaul of their attacking ranks.
With Lyon’s financial situation worsening, a sale of Fofana this summer seems inevitable. The club is reportedly open to offers, and Liverpool’s interest in the player is said to be intensifying. If the sale of Luis Diaz to Barcelona materialises, it could pave the way for Fofana’s arrival at Anfield. Barcelona’s ongoing interest in Diaz suggests that Liverpool may look to reinvest funds into a younger, more dynamic player like Fofana.
The winger’s relatively low price tag, especially when compared to other Premier League targets such as Gordon, makes him an attractive option for Liverpool. Additionally, his versatility and ability to adapt to different attacking roles could be key in a squad that values fluidity and rotation in its offensive play.
It’s not just Liverpool who are monitoring Fofana’s situation. Arsenal, with their focus on reinforcing their attacking line, see the Belgian as an ideal addition to their squad. The Gunners are hoping to add depth to their options on the wing, particularly as they look to support Bukayo Saka and improve the form of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Arsenal’s high-intensity style, much like Liverpool’s, would suit Fofana’s abilities, positioning them as serious contenders for his signature.
Aston Villa has also entered the race, offering Fofana the promise of consistent first-team football under Unai Emery. This could prove tempting for a young player eager to continue his development and gain valuable Premier League experience.
Fofana’s agent, Bobo Fofana, has expressed that his client’s “choice of heart” would be a move to Liverpool. Speaking publicly in May, he said, “He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and El Hadji Diouf.” The desire to follow in the footsteps of these icons, combined with the allure of joining a club with such a storied history, seems to make Liverpool the dream destination for Fofana. However, the agent also noted that Newcastle could be a more practical first step, offering a more stable environment to continue his development before potentially moving on to a European powerhouse.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Malick Fofana makes perfect sense. With Arne Slot at the helm, there is a clear emphasis on improving squad depth and adding youthful, dynamic players who can contribute to the team’s high-pressing, attacking style. Fofana fits the bill perfectly, offering an exciting mix of speed, technical ability, and the potential to grow into a key player at Anfield.
The £40million price tag is a fraction of the £80million Newcastle are demanding for Gordon, making Fofana an excellent value option in a market where financial prudence is becoming ever more important. With Barcelona’s interest in Luis Diaz potentially freeing up funds, the opportunity to secure a player of Fofana’s calibre at such a relatively low cost is an opportunity Liverpool should not pass up. If the young winger can adjust to the demands of Premier League football, he could become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s attacking unit in the years to come.
