Liverpool’s contract horizon has felt stormy in recent weeks, with the futures of Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson edging into sharp focus. Both defenders see their deals expire in summer 2026, and as things stand, departures for nothing remain a genuine possibility. Konate continues to anchor Arne Slot’s preferred defensive setup, even if recent form has dipped, and interest from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan has intensified the uncertainty. Robertson’s reduced Premier League minutes have not diminished his status inside the dressing room, where leadership and reliability remain currency.
Yet while both situations simmer, clarity has emerged around another pillar of the squad. Liverpool intend to trigger the one year extension in Alisson Becker’s contract, securing the Brazilian until 2027. As The Athletic reported, “Alisson’s contract also expires at the end of the year, but Liverpool are expected to take up the one year option they have to extend it into 2027.” Given his stature, his longevity at the club since 2017, and his influence in big moments across multiple title challenges, the decision reflects strategic sense rather than sentiment.
At 33, Alisson has just returned from injury and instantly reclaimed his place in the starting XI, reinforcing a hierarchy that has barely shifted since his arrival. His command of the penalty area, his decision making in high pressure phases and his temperament during Liverpool’s most fraught fixtures continue to set the standard.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili in 2024 signalled long term planning. Yet while the Georgian has performed admirably during Alisson’s absences, the gap in pedigree remains evident. The Athletic’s reporting suggests the club believe the veteran remains the superior option through 2027, a stance that reflects both performance data and managerial preference.

The impending decisions on Konate and Robertson still loom large. Richard Hughes has major calls to make on both defenders and an evolving wage structure adds complexity. Liverpool have solved one cornerstone issue with Alisson’s extension, but the wider defensive picture remains unsettled.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, the Alisson update feels like a grounding moment amid all the noise about departures. Fans have watched the team rebuild under Slot, winning the Premier League title in his debut season, and stability at goalkeeper is essential if that momentum is to continue. Alisson staying until 2027 provides exactly that. His influence goes beyond saves, he sets the emotional tone of the back line and there is relief across the fanbase that he will remain the anchor for at least two more years.
Konate and Robertson are trickier emotional puzzles. Losing either for free would sting, especially Konate, who feels like the ideal centre back for Slot’s structure when fully fit and confident. Supporters recognise that age and injuries complicate Robertson’s case, yet many still feel his leadership remains vital. The hope is that clarity arrives quickly, because uncertainty around key defensive figures often bleeds into performance levels.
Mamardashvili staying patient is another subplot fans will monitor. He has shown quality, but he is learning while standing behind one of the world’s best. For many supporters, 2027 feels like a natural transition point. Until then, the club look secure in goal, and that alone allows fans to breathe a little easier during a crucial stage of the rebuild.
