Report: Man United star wanted by European giants in potential surprise exit

Manchester United have a decision to make, though in truth it should be a straightforward one. AC Milan want Amad Diallo, and the interest is real enough, according to Caught Offside. The problem for Milan is simple, United are under no pressure to do business.
The report states that “AC Milan have identified Amad Diallo as one of their priority attacking targets.” That makes sense. Amad is young, technical and flexible across the front line. He gives you “pace, close control and ability to operate in several attacking positions”, and those are qualities every serious side values.
Milan’s angle is obvious too. “Ruben Amorim wants to add a young and inventive winger to his squad”, and there is a familiarity there that could matter if talks develop. The article adds that “His previous relationship with Amad could give Milan an advantage if negotiations begin.” Fine. An advantage is not leverage, though. They are not the same thing.

This is where the story really sits. “Reuters reported that Amad signed a new agreement in January 2025 keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2030.” That is the key fact. Contracts matter. Length of control matters. If a club wants the player and the selling club do not need cash, then the buying club must pay properly.
The source also makes clear that Milan are “preparing a financially controlled proposal rather than an enormous bid”. In other words, they want the player, but they want him on their terms. That is usually admirable. It also usually fails when the other side holds all the cards.
There is also mention that Brighton and Newcastle are watching the situation. Again, understandable. Good players attract interest. That does not make a transfer inevitable. United “remain in a powerful position and would have little reason to approve a sale unless the player pushes for a move or a major offer arrives.” That is the crux of it.
Unless Amad actively wants out, and there is nothing here to suggest that he does, United should be firm. As the original report puts it, “United should keep Amad unless he clearly asks to leave.” Correct. There is no obvious football reason to weaken your squad, especially for a controlled bid from abroad.
And let’s be honest about the player’s development. “Amad remains a valuable long-term asset, and Milan must submit an exceptional offer before Carrick even considers allowing him to leave.” That is the sensible position, and probably the only one.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this feels like one of those stories that should only go one way. If Amad Diallo is genuinely part of the plan, then keep him and move on. Simple. We have spent too many years watching the club make muddled decisions, then acting surprised when the squad lacks balance, imagination and depth.
Amad gives United something useful and specific. He can beat a man, keep the ball in tight spaces and link play quickly. Those players are not easy to replace, certainly not cheaply. If AC Milan are serious, then they can prove it with a fee that actually hurts. Anything less is a non-starter.
The bit that stands out is the contract until 2030. That should end the cheap-talk phase of this discussion immediately. United do not need to fold, and they should not. If the club are trying to build properly, then you do not sell one of your more creative attackers because another side thinks it can be clever with the structure of the bid.
Of course, if the player wants out, then that changes things. No club should beg anyone to stay. But absent that, the answer is obvious. Keep Amad, let him grow, and make Milan look elsewhere. United have spent enough time helping other clubs solve their problems. They should start solving their own.
