In an era where numbers often shape narratives, the figure looming largest around Manchester United is not just a fee or statistic, but a player. At 6ft 5in, Benjamin Sesko represents both a physical and symbolic statement of intent. A towering striker with 39 goals and 8 assists in 87 games for RB Leipzig, Sesko is now firmly in United’s sights after Christopher Vivell, director of recruitment, gave the green light to pursue the Slovenian forward.
According to BILD, United have accelerated their interest following the disappointment of losing out on Liam Delap, with Chelsea swooping in for the young Ipswich striker. Vivell, who has reportedly followed Sesko’s progress closely – including during Leipzig’s recent 3-2 win over Wolfsburg – is said to have sanctioned a push to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.

Sesko is not a player to go unnoticed. His nickname, “The Beast”, speaks volumes about his playing style. Defenders are often dwarfed by his frame and dominated by his presence. And yet, there is more to his game than brute force. His goals have been varied, intelligent, and clinical. The numbers bear this out: a goal or assist every 1.81 games in the Bundesliga is a return few players of his age and size can match.
The clause in his Leipzig contract means a summer exit is possible – but it comes with a substantial price tag. United would need to trigger his €80m (£67.3m) release clause, a significant leap from the £30m they had hoped to spend on Delap. Having already committed £62.5m to sign Matheus Cunha and with a £60m interest in Bryan Mbeumo, United are walking a financial tightrope.
With Newcastle circling Mbeumo and Arsenal targeting Sesko, Manchester United risk becoming reactive once again. Delay in execution could see them fall short in a familiar pattern. If Vivell’s backing turns into decisive action, however, United could make their most commanding attacking acquisition since Zlatan Ibrahimović.
There is, of course, the shadow of affordability. United’s path forward may involve choosing between their shortlisted targets. But in a market increasingly defined by both scarcity and speculation, investing in Sesko might just prove prudent – provided they act before it’s too late.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this feels like an encouraging move – but also one that must be handled with care. Sesko’s profile is undeniably exciting. Young, physical, and increasingly productive in a top European league, he ticks the boxes that United fans have been hoping to see addressed for several seasons. With Rasmus Højlund still developing, there’s room for another forward to rotate and lead the line when needed.
However, the reported fee of €80m makes this a high-stakes decision. United have made costly errors in the transfer market before, and while Sesko looks a strong prospect, it’s crucial that this isn’t another example of buying potential without a clear plan.
There’s also the matter of competition. Arsenal’s interest will worry fans, especially given their current upward momentum and sharpness in the market. If United want to be seen as a serious destination again, especially for emerging talent, they need to start beating top rivals to players like this.
Overall, Sesko seems worth the gamble – but only if the financials don’t impact other necessary business. For once, fans will be hoping the club gets this one right and fast.
