Real and Atletico Madrid Eye Move for Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as a surprise transfer target for both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, according to the Daily Mail. The 20-year-old, who was once seen as a cornerstone of United’s midfield future, is reportedly being monitored by the two Spanish giants as well as several Premier League clubs.

Mainoo’s Current Struggles

Mainoo, who rose through the ranks at Old Trafford, has endured a difficult spell under new United boss Ruben Amorim. As the Daily Mail highlighted: “United manager Ruben Amorim does not view Mainoo as a great fit for his 3-4-3 formation.”

After returning from injury in December, the midfielder has slipped from being a starter to little more than a substitute. This season, he has not played a single minute in United’s opening two Premier League fixtures, sparking speculation over his future.

Madrid Clubs Monitoring Situation

Sources close to the matter suggest a season-long loan is of interest in Madrid, with the Daily Mail reporting: “Both Madrid giants and a host of Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation with Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.”

The player himself is said to be open to staying at United but wants regular first-team action. The lure of Champions League football could tempt him abroad. However, United’s midfield depth remains thin, with only four central midfielders currently in the squad. This makes a loan move unlikely, unless a permanent deal is placed on the table.

Contract Situation Adds to Tension

Adding further complexity is Mainoo’s contract situation. The Daily Mail revealed that talks over a new deal have stalled, with United expected to make a decision within the next 48 hours. This uncertainty only fuels the growing speculation that his Old Trafford future may be in doubt.

Mainoo’s current situation is striking, given his pivotal role under Ten Hag — from starting in England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain to scoring in United’s dramatic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, the situation around Kobbie Mainoo feels incredibly frustrating. Just a year ago, supporters saw him as the heartbeat of a new-look United midfield, a homegrown talent who could dominate games with maturity beyond his years. Now, under Ruben Amorim, he looks surplus to requirements.

Many fans would argue that it’s far too early to write him off. After all, the season has barely started and United remain short of midfield depth. Selling or loaning him out now, especially without a clear replacement, would seem reckless. Supporters know the club cannot afford another mistake in handling young talent.

There is also scepticism about Amorim’s system. A 3-4-3 may not suit Mainoo, but many fans would contend that a player of his quality deserves tactical flexibility from the manager. United should build around players like him, not sideline them.

On the other hand, fans can understand Mainoo’s frustrations. At 20, he needs game time, and the attraction of playing Champions League football in Madrid is obvious. Still, most would prefer to see him commit to United, sign a new deal, and be trusted to grow into the role.
