Manchester United are preparing for life after Bruno Fernandes — and they may not have to look far for his replacement. Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Gonçalves has emerged as a prime target, with Old Trafford officials considering a £70 million move for the versatile Portuguese attacker, should Fernandes depart for a record-breaking Saudi payday.
Al-Hilal have stunned United by signalling their intent to offer Fernandes a three-year deal worth a staggering £180 million. While no decision has been made, the prospect of such riches has caused understandable unease in the red half of Manchester.
The 30-year-old Fernandes was once again United’s talisman this past season, racking up 19 goals and 20 assists despite Erik ten Hag’s side often misfiring. But the Portuguese playmaker may see Saudi Arabia as a final career-defining payday, especially with United failing to challenge meaningfully for silverware.
Though Fernandes remains pivotal, United’s hierarchy are well aware of the need to future-proof. Pedro Gonçalves, at 26, represents a younger, dynamic alternative — and crucially, a player familiar with the unique demands of playing under Ruben Amorim.
A former Wolves player, Gonçalves was transformed under Amorim into a potent attacking force. Originally a deeper midfielder, he was redeployed as an advanced playmaker and wide threat — a move that unlocked his full potential. In the 2020/21 season, Gonçalves netted 23 goals and assisted four times in just 32 games as Sporting clinched their first Primeira Liga title in nearly two decades.
His eye for goal and positional flexibility mirror the attributes that made Fernandes indispensable at United. While his recent campaign was disrupted by a thigh injury — suffered during Amorim’s final match in charge of Sporting — he has returned to fitness and is once again attracting interest across Europe, with Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen previously monitoring his progress.
United would face some criticism for letting Fernandes go — but if his departure funds a £70 million swoop for Gonçalves, it could prove a shrewd move. Four years younger, tactically malleable, and with a proven goal-scoring record from midfield, Gonçalves could help usher in a new era at Old Trafford.
Of course, much hinges on Fernandes’ decision. Should he accept Al-Hilal’s lucrative offer, the dominoes may fall quickly. And while losing a captain and leader would sting, United fans may find comfort in the arrival of a familiar Portuguese face — one already earmarked for greatness.
