Jose Mourinho’s first pre-season back as the manager of Real Madrid begins today, and the Portuguese coach has some clear objectives to meet.

While he does not have most of the first-team players at his command from day one, he is tasked with making decisions on the futures of the few players who are in Madrid.

The manager will thus keep a close eye on every single player currently in pre-season and draw up a blueprint of his plans next season including an estimate on how much he counts on every player.

One such player whose immediate future depends on Mourinho’s evaluation is Franco Mastantuono.

The condition to stay

As reported by Miguel Serrano in a recent update, there is a clear-cut condition that will decide whether or not the Argentine protege stays at Real Madrid next season – and the matter is not entirely in his hands.

For starters, he must make a good impression on Mourinho and convince the manager that he can be a handy option on the right wing in the coming weeks to stand any chance of extending his stay.

Further, however, he also must hope that Real Madrid do not make any new signings on the right wing.

If the player can convince the coach and the club does not bring a fresh face, Mastantuono will stay for the upcoming campaign. Should the player fail to make a good impression on the manager, however, he will leave on loan immediately this summer.

A lot to prove

Unlike many of his teammates who have past performances at the club to vouch for their quality, Franco Mastantuono does not have too much to lean back on.

It is true that the player made a decent impression in his initial months after joining last season, but he was never really the game-changer Real Madrid expected or the creative force the club wish for on the right flank.

Once he suffered pubalgia close to December, there was really no coming back for the player and his season only went from bad to worse. He made a small surge in prominence towards the end of the season, but was again not the first choice.

With Mourinho looking for a real creative attacking force on his wing, Mastantuono thus has a lot to prove and not much time to do so. The coming weeks will be crucial for him to make a case to stay at his dream club.
