Tottenham Hotspur’s season has veered into uncertainty, yet planning for the future has already begun. As reported by TeamTalk, the north London club are assessing defensive reinforcements despite sitting just one point above the drop, following a damaging 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
With seven games remaining, the pressure is mounting on interim boss Igor Tudor. Spurs’ fragile league position has exposed structural weaknesses, particularly at the back. Anticipated interest in Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could force a defensive rebuild, especially without European football to offer.
Attention has turned to Lutsharel Geertruida, currently impressing on loan at Sunderland. Valued at around £20m by RB Leipzig, he has been described as ‘extraordinary’ and even compared to Sergio Ramos. That comparison alone signals both quality and leadership potential.

Geertruida’s appeal lies in his adaptability. Comfortable at right-back, centre-back, and in midfield, he offers tactical flexibility. As noted, “Lutsharel Geertruida offers versatility: RB, CB, or inverted full-back in build-up,” while also being “strong defensively in duels and positioning.” For a Spurs side lacking balance, that profile is compelling.
Tottenham are expected to undergo significant change, potentially including a new manager. Recruitment will need to prioritise resilience and adaptability. Geertruida fits that mould, but first-team guarantees may dictate his decision, with Sunderland still holding an option.
Spurs’ survival may ultimately determine whether this rebuild begins from strength or necessity.
There is something deeply unsettling about how Tottenham have drifted into this position. A club of their stature should not be planning transfer windows around survival scenarios, yet here we are. The idea of losing Romero or Van de Ven feels less like speculation and more like inevitability if results do not improve.
Geertruida looks a smart target, no doubt. Versatility, composure, and tactical intelligence are exactly what Spurs have lacked. But this cannot be another short term fix. Supporters have seen too many reactive windows, too many squads patched together without a clear identity.
If he truly has been described as ‘extraordinary’, then Spurs must act decisively. Not cautiously, not conditionally. This squad needs leaders, not just options. The comparison to Sergio Ramos raises expectations, but also highlights how far Spurs are from that level defensively.
There is also a wider concern. A potential managerial change, uncertainty around key players, and a fragile league position all point to instability. Recruitment alone will not fix that. Structure, direction, and belief must follow.
Fans will hope this is the start of something coherent. Right now, it feels like survival first, ambition later.
