Italian football finance expert Marco Bellinazzo believes that Oaktree Capital would want more than €2-3 billion to sell Inter Milan.

Speaking to Italian outlet Radio Nerazzurra, via FCInterNews, the Il Sole 24 Ore journalist explained the North American owners’ ambitious strategy.

Oaktree Capital took over Inter in May of last year.

The Nerazzurri had previously been owned by Suning. The Chinese company had owned the club for the better part of a decade, starting in 2017.

However, Suning had to take on a massive loan from Oaktree in the spring of 2021.

That was in order to cover costs at Inter in the financial crisis that came about after the start of the pandemic.

When Oaktree took over, there were rumours that they would look to sell Inter for a profit right away.

However, that has not been the North American owners’ approach.

Instead, Oaktree have been running Inter for nearly a year now.

Evidently, the investment fund believe that they can increase the value of Inter over the coming months and years, on and off the pitch. Then, they could potentially sell it for a higher profit.

Football finance expert Marco Bellinazzo noted that “There’s a lot of interest in Serie A.”

“Clearly, a big club like Inter can be the target of that interest,” he continued.

“Oaktree want to sell for more than the €2-2.5 billion that are being talked about.”

“They would like to adjust it to US deductible prices,” Bellinazzo noted.

“Obviously it would be hard to find such a generous buyer with an interest in Italian football.”

For this reason, Marco Bellinazzo said, “I would discount the possibility of an immediate sale.”

“Their aim is to get the club in the best possible position to allow for a sale at a much higher figure.”

He noted that “The club has gradually been closing that gap.”

“At the end of the season, particularly with the Champions League, they could break even,” Bellinazzo predicted of Inter’s finances. “Cutting the total debt – at the moment, their gross debt is 5-10% per year.”

“The revenues in 2024 have reached record levels,” he added. “So the club is financially healthy.”
