Josko Gvardiol will reportedly have two options regarding his Manchester City future this summer, according to new reports from Germany.
While the sky blue hierarchy is simultaneously engineering an aggressive summer recruitment strategy before the window opens, securing the future of their €90 million defensive anchor has moved closer to the top of Hugo Viana’s priorities.
The 23-year-old left-sided centre-back remains a vital pillar of the first-team squad, fresh off another impressive season but one largely hampered by a leg bone fracture against Chelsea in early January – forcing him to be sidelined until the final few matches of the campaign.
However, with the European transfer window rapidly approaching its official opening, the allure of the Spanish capital has possibly added a layer of intense drama to his current standing.
Josko Gvardiol’s camp is fully aware that his unique profile – blending world-class progressive carrying with positional versatility – makes him a strong asset as the club builds to wrestle the Premier League title back from Arsenal when the 2026/27 season launches in August.
Now, according to the information of Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Josko Gvardiol will decide between two options this summer: either signing a new contract at Manchester City beyond 2028, or moving to Real Madrid this summer.
With City pushing to keep the Croatian international, it is further confirmed that Bayern Munich are ‘100 per cent out of the race’ despite huge appreciation for the centre-back, with Gvardiol considered too expensive and there being no need for recruitment in his position.
Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez is known to be targeting elite, long-term successors to side in need to a refresh after Barcelona’s La Liga triumph last season, and Gvardiol possibly fits their ‘Galactico’ profile.

For Hugo Viana, losing an asset of Gvardiol’s magnitude will be completely out of the question, meaning Etihad Stadium executives are prepared to draw up a highly lucrative package to tempt the Croatian to put pen to paper.
As discussions look to escalate between the player’s representatives and Manchester City officials over the summer, the defender’s immediate focus will be fixated on the FIFA World Cup in North America.
