Tottenham are looking for defensive reinforcements in this January’s transfer window after a major injury crisis in that department this season.

It’s been a hugely challenging campaign for Spurs so far, and Ange Postecoglou has been rather unlucky to have the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven out for so long.

Sources have now informed CaughtOffside that this could lead Tottenham to pursue a deal for Udinese centre-back Thomas Kristensen this month, as he’s likely to be available for around £16.5million.

Leicester City and Bayer Leverkusen have also shown an interest in Kristensen after his recent strong performances in Serie A, CaughtOffside understands, but Tottenham clearly have an urgent need for a signing like this.

It’s currently felt that the strongest interest is coming from Tottenham, but it could remain an interesting saga to watch as other clubs might be able to better guarantee the 22-year-old regular playing time in the long term.

Even if Spurs need cover in defence right now, Kristensen might find it hard to establish himself as a regular starter once the likes of Romero and Van de Ven return to full fitness.

Leicester could perhaps be a better bet in that regard, though of course it could also be a bit of a gamble heading to the King Power Stadium while the Foxes look like they’re in a relegation battle.

New manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will no doubt want signings to boost his side’s hopes of staying up, but it won’t be easy to persuade top players to join when results and performances aren’t going well.

Kristensen looks a promising young defender and it would be exciting to see him test himself in the Premier League in the next phase of his career.
