As the international break concludes, Richie Laryea of Toronto FC has emerged as one of Canada’s standout players. Despite Toronto FC’s early exit from the MLS season, Laryea demonstrated his quality on the international stage, playing a crucial role in Canada’s success in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Canada faced Suriname in a two-legged quarterfinal clash, with Laryea playing an instrumental role in both matches. The highlight came in the second leg, held at Toronto’s BMO Field, where Canada delivered a dominant 3-0 victory to seal a 4-0 aggregate win and advance to the semifinals.
Laryea’s influence was evident throughout the match, as he completed the full 90 minutes on the left flank. His offensive contributions were particularly noteworthy, recording 73 touches and achieving an 82% passing accuracy by completing 45 of 55 attempted passes. His ability to create and distribute the ball made him a vital part of Canada’s attacking setup.
Defensively, Laryea was solid despite Suriname’s limited offensive threat. He managed one clearance, two successful tackles, and was only dribbled past twice, showcasing his versatility and reliability on both ends of the pitch.
With Canada’s semifinal berth secured, Laryea’s international duties come to a close for 2024. As Toronto FC prepares for the offseason, Laryea’s form will be a key factor for The Reds in 2025 as they look to bounce back from a disappointing MLS campaign.
Canada, on the other hand, will aim to build on this momentum in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals next year, with Laryea likely to remain a cornerstone of their plans. His performances this international break underscore his importance to both club and country, setting high expectations for what’s to come.
