Hugo Rincón, Peio Canales and Beñat Gerenabarrena are strengthening their case for a place in Athletic’s next pre-season. As reported by as.com, the on-loan trio are excelling at Girona, Racing and Castellón, pressing for inclusion at Lezama.

Rincón has earned Míchel Sánchez’s trust at right-back for Girona, where he is on loan from Athletic. He has started five of the last six games, capped by an excellent display on Monday against Barcelona.

Athletic’s technical department, led by Mikel González, weighed recalling the two midfielders in January, then chose to let them continue as key figures. The plan was for them to pile up minutes, responsibility and experience.

With Segunda leaders Racing, Canales covers 12 kilometres a game and has often operated as a holding midfielder. The Spain Under-21 international has added bite and arrives in the box, scoring four goals in 20 appearances.

Gerenabarrena has won over Castalia with grit, character and a relentless tempo at leaders Castellón. After a slow start he has been a regular since Pablo Hernández took charge, contributing two goals in 23 matches for the division’s surprise package.
