With just over a week until Real Madrid’s presidential vote, Enrique Riquelme escalated his campaign in Málaga and said that, if elected, Rodri would play for the club. He also promised to deliver a Ballon d’Or winner.
Speaking to Cadena COPE on arrival at the NH in Málaga, he said he would begin outlining his sporting project that night and start naming names. He added that across the coming days he would unveil his backroom team and at least two star signings aimed at making Madrid more competitive, and on Wednesday he would reveal a foreign world star he says is already secured.
Riquelme criticised Florentino Pérez’s refusal to hold a debate. He said he was surprised, insisted he respects Pérez’s legacy, and argued that a discussion after 20 years is healthy. He also questioned whether someone unwilling to debate is prepared to lead the club.
He was also challenged over his absence from Castilla’s play-off against Sabadell at the Alfredo Di Stéfano on Friday, which Pérez attended. Riquelme said he went to work at his campaign headquarters after the bullfighting, and claimed supporters wearing his campaign polos were denied entry.
Earlier on Saturday, ahead of the UEFA Champions League final, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal fans saw four buses branded “Riquelme Presidente” circulating near the stadium. The vehicles carried the messages “Enjoy tonight. We’ll be back” and “Rivals come and go. Real Madrid comes back”.
