According to Globo.com, River Plate-URU is demanding 100,000 dollars (R$ 505,000) from Grêmio over Arezo’s loan to Peñarol, with the payment about 20 days overdue.
River Plate-URU holds 50% of Arezo’s economic rights, so it is due half of the fee Grêmio received for renewing the centre-forward’s loan until the end of this season.
Grêmio charged 400,000 dollars to extend the deal, payable in two instalments. The club had 15 days to pass on River’s share after receiving Peñarol’s payment, and River is claiming half of one instalment.
The Uruguayan side is considering taking the case to FIFA next week to contest the amount. Any action could trigger a fresh transfer ban, stopping registrations until the debt is cleared.
Arezo is on loan at Peñarol until December, with a purchase option set at four million dollars, R$ 20.2 million at current rates.
In December, under new management, Grêmio settled a R$ 7 million debt with Granada, from Spain, over Arezo’s transfer, which had triggered a registration ban in November. In January, it paid 151,500 euros, R$ 943,800 at the time, to River Plate-URU for the first loan, avoiding another ban.
