Rob Edwards begins his tenure as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager on Saturday when they face a Crystal Palace side that has looked dangerous for much of the season.

The match offers him an immediate test, with Wolves rooted to the bottom of the table and badly in need of momentum after a bruising start to the campaign.

Edwards arrives knowing he must spark an upturn quickly if he wants to pull Wolves away from danger.

Their season has produced no wins from 11 matches – only two draws and a league-high 25 goals conceded.

Wolves have been in this position only once before, when they failed to win any of their opening 12 league games in 1983-84.

They can draw some hope from Premier League history, with three clubs surviving after going winless through their first 12 matches.

Edwards also brings familiarity with Molineux from his previous spells as player, coach and Under-23s manager. However, his first assignment is daunting.

Palace have been one of the league’s liveliest sides in recent weeks, although their draw with Brighton & Hove Albion halted a run of three straight wins since their defeat at Arsenal.

Oliver Glasner’s team are tenth in the table but only two points outside the top four. Their recent form has been steadier than their lowly possession numbers suggest.

Their one weakness has been their away form, with defeats at Everton and Arsenal breaking a long run of solidity on the road.

Wolves may feel this is the moment to catch Palace, who looked slightly blunted against Brighton and are without captain Marc Guehi.

Palace have a dominant historical record in this fixture, having won eight of the last 14 Premier League meetings and maintaining their best win rate against any opponent they have faced more than 10 times.

Edwards knows the opportunity is significant. Wolves need points urgently, and Palace’s recent dip may provide a small opening.

A positive result would not lift them off the bottom, but would offer the new manager the foundation he needs as he begins the challenge of rescuing their season.
