Roberto De Zerbi will have to hit the ground running to save Tottenham from relegation
Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach.
De Zerbi has signed a long-term contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he replaces Igor Tudor, whose interim spell came to an end by mutual agreement after just 44 days.
The task facing De Zerbi is to ensure Spurs avoid relegation from the Premier League.
As things stand, Tottenham are one point above the drop zone and could slip into the bottom three by the time the Italian tactician takes charge of his first game.
Having left his role as Marseille boss in February, De Zerbi was able to average 1.81 point-per-game in Ligue 1 across one and a half seasons, winning 12 of 21 league matches this term.
With seven games remaining to reserve Tottenham’s status as a Premier League team, it is clear that De Zerbi must get off to a fast start.
When is Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge?
As communicated in the official club statement, De Zerbi will start work immediately once he has received a work permit.
With Spurs not in FA Cup action this weekend, it means the new head coach’s first game will be against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on April 12.
De Zerbi’s first home game in charge of Tottenham comes six days later against former club Brighton, who are in contention to qualify for Europe.
What are Tottenham’s remaining fixtures?
We've already mentioned the first two, but it is important De Zerbi gets off to a flying start as Spurs end the month with trip to Wolves and then begin May by facing Aston Villa away from home.
Tottenham’s penultimate home game of the season is shaping up to be a relegation six-pointer against Leeds on May 9.
Things don't get any easier after that as Tottenham battle London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their final away game of the campaign before wrapping up the season at home to an Everton side who have been impressive on the road.
