Andy Robertson has said he will try and aid the development of Liverpool teammate Milos Kerkez but insists he is not ready to give up the left-back role.

Liverpool signed Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40m deal this summer with the 21-year-old viewed as a long-term replacement for Robertson at left-back.

Kerkez has started all four Premier League games to date, but has endured an mixed start to his Anfield career. The Hungarian was substituted in the first half of the 1-0 win at Burnley on Sunday, following a yellow card for simulation and series of fouls.

Robertson replaced Kerkez and could retain his place for Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid.

Discussing the development of Kerkez and competition for a place in the team, Robertson said he’s keen to pass on experience to aid Liverpool’s long-term future.

“He’s only young and I think we forget that, all the new signings are young but have incredible potential and they are the future of the club and you try to help them as much as you can,’ Robertson told Ian Doyle.

“He will be the starting left-back for Liverpool in the future and it’s up to me to push him this season and help him improve. He has a fantastic future ahead of him and he just needs to keep working hard and not let it affect him, which it won’t as he’s a confident lad.

“I’ll help him as much as I can but I do want to play games and be the starting left-back and I have got to keep pushing to try to produce the levels I know I can do as well.”
