The Rodri injury reportedly seems worse than Manchester City initially expected, in what could be a decisive swing towards Arsenal in this season’s Premier League title race.
The Spain international is a crucial player for Man City, but is unavailable again today as Pep Guardiola’s side take on Brentford at the Etihad Stadium.
City’s record without Rodri is poor, so this could mean it’s going to be hard for Guardiola’s side to keep up with the current league leaders, especially as they have the slightly harder fixtures remaining in the title run-in.
See below as Sam Lee says the Rodri injury is more serious than it seemed at first, and it’s not entirely clear when the 29-year-old will be back…
The initial scans on Rodri after the Arsenal game didn’t pick up too much of concern but the groin injury proved to be a bit more serious than it seemed. He’s back in training so should be playing again this season but it was hoped he would be back already
Rodri was injured for large chunks of last season and it really hurt City as they ended up finishing third in the Premier League and losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace.
Needless to say, Guardiola needs the midfielder back as soon as possible if his side are to stand a chance of winning all their remaining games, which is likely what they’ll need to do now if they are to have any chance of beating Arsenal to the title.
Rodri played only eight games in all competitions last season, and his return this term has been a big boost for MCFC, with the former Atletico Madrid man managing 31 appearances in total.
City should still be favourites to beat Brentford this evening, but it’s not the easiest game and we saw how vulnerable this team can be in the recent 3-3 draw with Everton.
