Roger Schmidt will replace Jürgen Klopp as Red Bull Head of Global Football. The Red Bull Group said on Friday that he has signed a long-term deal and will begin from the first of October.

The 59-year-old will leave his role as the J League’s global sports director at the end of September.

Schmidt previously led RB Salzburg for two seasons before taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen. He most recently managed Benfica until August 2024.

He said the appeal lies in Red Bull’s unique and ambitious club portfolio, its clear focus on developing young talent and winning at the highest level, and he expressed pride at rejoining the Red Bull family.

His remit will cover six clubs, including RB Leipzig and former side RB Salzburg. Premier League sides Leeds United and Paris FC are also included, as the Red Bull Group hold majority shares in those clubs. Florian Schulz will become Global Head of Commercial.
