Manchester United are currently focusing on trying to find the perfect heir for the departing Casemiro.
Manuel Ugarte was signed in 2024 for that express purpose, but the Uruguayan has been a major disappointment and INEOS are keen to cut their losses.
Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest was identified as the ideal replacement for the Brazilian, but the Englishman seems to prefer a move to Manchester City instead.
While the noisy neighbours are yet to match Forest’s asking price, the Red Devils have rightly moved on to alternative targets.
Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali would be a blockbuster signing but his asking price and wage demands are proving to be major obstacles.
As per recent reports, the 20-time English league champions are inching closer to agreeing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson.
It was initially expected that the Serie A ace would serve as Ugarte’s replacement, but The Times have a different story to tell.
“Manchester United close in on £38m deal for Brazil midfielder Ederson.
“Atalanta player viewed as long-term replacement for outgoing Casemiro as Carrick begins planning for Champions League return next season.”
Fans will be worried if that proves to be the case. While the Brazilian international is a solid buy, especially for the price, it would be a massive gamble to trust him to play at the base of United’s midfield.
The 26-year-old has a solid engine, and is exceptional without the ball but there are limitations with the ball at his feet. Also, adjusting to the pace and physicality of the Premier League from Serie A is no joke — just ask Rasmus Hojlund.
Mateus Fernandes of West Ham, and Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand are some of the other backup targets on United’s radar.
It will be interesting to see how many midfielders INEOS end up buying in the end and what role they play under Carrick.
