Alessio Romagnoli halted a late move to Al-Sadd after Lazio requested he forgo wages, according to Il Corriere dello Sport, Il Messaggero and Alfredo Pedullà.
The centre-back had pushed for an exit amid what he saw as broken salary promises from Claudio Lotito, even bidding farewell to supporters in Lecce last weekend.
On Sunday, Lazio removed him from the market and he skipped training in response. With the Qatari window closing on Saturday, Al-Sadd launched a final push. The clubs reached an agreement but did not complete the switch.
That refusal covered wages for November to January, about €600,000, a request Lotito has made before, as Lucas Biglia has documented. The collapse cost Romagnoli a three-year contract worth €18 million.
It was framed as a matter of principle, after long-standing irritation with Lotito’s demeanour and unfulfilled promises.
Romagnoli is expected to rejoin Maurizio Sarri’s squad in the coming days, although he may not remain at Formello for long, with Al-Sadd promising another attempt in the summer.
